State Treasurer Goldberg Returned Bronze Star Medal to Family of Veteran Staff Sgt. Walter Frye Sr.

BOSTON — State Treasurer Deborah B. Goldberg returned the Bronze Star Medal of Staff Sgt. Walter Frye Sr. to his son, Walter Frye Jr., during a special ceremony honoring the veteran’s military service and dedication to the country.

“There are few things more meaningful than being able to return something this important to a family,” said Treasurer Goldberg. “This medal represents years of courage and sacrifice to our country. After serving through three wars, Staff Sgt. Walter Frye Sr. earned this honor, and it was incredibly special to help bring it back where it belongs, with his family, where his memory and legacy continue to live on.”

Staff Sgt. Frye enlisted in the U.S. Army at the age of 20 and served during World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. He served with the 999th Armored Field Artillery Battalion and received the Bronze Star Medal in 1951 for his service during the Korean War.

The Bronze Star Medal was recovered by the Treasury’s Unclaimed Property Division and traced back to the Frye family as part of the agency’s ongoing work to return military medals and valuable items to their rightful owners and families.

The Unclaimed Property Division frequently recovers items of great personal significance, including military medals, family heirlooms, and irreplaceable documents. When such items are found, the office makes every effort to identify and reunite them with their rightful owners or surviving family members.

Treasurer Goldberg encourages all Massachusetts residents to visit findmassmoney.gov or call 617-367-0400 to check whether they or their loved ones have unclaimed property waiting to be recovered.
